Moneyball.com.au Review: Best Australian DFS Site? (2019 Update)

I remember a few years ago I’d consistently read the sports news and seeing constant ‘DFS rankings’ and daily fantasy tips.

Daily Fantasy Sports sounded perfect. I could use what I know (or think I know) about the week’s matchups to give myself a small advantage.

I also didn’t need to commit to a full-season of Supercoach, which was great, because I usually waste my trades by round fifteen anyway.

However, being here in Australia, I couldn’t play any daily fantasy sports. The heavy hitters like Fanduel and Draftkings were off-limits in Australia.

That was until Moneyball.com.au came around.

I signed up to the site not long after hearing about it. I have been using it off and on since.

These days, Moneyball is one of the most popular DFS sites in Australia, which offers a range of American, UK, and Australian sports.

This Moneyball.com.au review will see if the Australian DFS site is worth your time, and more importantly, your money.

Moneyball.com.au Review Summary

A Quick Review of Moneyball

Range of sports: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
If you’re an Australian sports fan, there is probably all you need on Moneyball. The sports include AFL, NRL, NFL, NBA, MLB, Premier League, Cricket, and more.

Price: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
There are a bunch of free and cheap competitions that make it easy to get started at a low price. There’s also some more expensive

Ease of use: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
I find Moneyball quite intuitive to use, and there are plenty of effective options like the mobile app and an impressive ‘help’ page.

What we like

  • Guaranteed prize money
  • Their ‘help’ section is thorough and has a lot of useful information for beginners
  • You can trash-talk the other fools in your competition on the app
  • Games at a range of prices
  • Beginner-friendly
  • You can create your own games

What we don’t like:

  • Could do with a broader variety of sports as DFS popularity increases
  • I don’t like the one-game competitions that much
  • Only DFS (no tipping etc)

Summary: Moneyball is probably the best service for daily fantasy sports in Australia. While there are others on the market, I have been thrilled with the product at Moneyball.com.au.

What is Moneyball.com.au?

As mentioned earlier, Moneyball is one of Australia’s most prominent daily fantasy sports sites.

FYI: Daily Fantasy Sports, or DFS, is a fantasy sports competition and similar to regular fantasy, players get points based on their statistics. However, DFS sites offer daily contests, where there is usually prize money.

The Australian company has been around since 2015 and looks to increase public engagement and participation in sports (official mission). Moneyball also gives you another platform to take the piss out of your mates when you beat them (unofficial mission).

The site has seen a few changes since it’s beginnings. Most notably, the addition of new sports.

The sports included with Moneyball.com.au these days are:

Who is Moneyball for?

Well, for starters, Moneyball Australia (like any Daily Fantasy Sports) is for someone over 18 years old. While a minor can play Supercoach or any free fantasy sports, once there is money involved, it is technically gambling. So, be cool and don’t use it if you’re underage.

Note: While we’re talking about gambling, sure a $2 game here or there won’t hurt, but gambling can mess up your life if you let it. Please make sure you gamble responsibly and never bet more than you’re willing to lose.

Moneyball.com.au is the perfect choice for anybody who is after an introduction to Daily Fantasy Sports in Australia.

The platform is ideally suited for beginners and those who don’t want to take it incredibly seriously. This is due to the easy-to-use interface and the social aspect of the live chat.

Although don’t get me wrong, with some contests having $1000 buy-ins, there are expensive choices too.

The ability to create your private competitions is also a great way to keep competition up with your mates during the season. Your custom competitions can be one-offs, or you can make one every round for the season.

So, if you are an experienced fantasy player looking to move to Daily Fantasy, or looking to step into fantasy sports for the first time, Moneyball Australia is a great choice.

What are the best Moneyball features?

Moneyball Australia has a few key factors that pull it apart from the opposition. Some of my favourites include:

  • Free games for beginners or those looking to play for free
  • Only select nine players in every game so it is consistent
  • A wide range of sports; odds are you’ll find something you’re interested in
  • Incredibly helpful user guide and site. Seriously, I have found answers to every question I’ve had on there, which saves contacting support
  • A live chat feature with multiple channels unique to the sport of your choice. You can talk smack to other Moneyball Australia users
  • Fantasy news on all players so you’ll never accidentally pick a player who is injured

Playing Moneyball Australia in America:

There are so many ex-pat Aussies living in America. If you’re an Aussie living in the states, you can sign up to Moneyball’s American sister-site, Slam Fantasy.

What could be improved…

While Moneyball is an excellent platform for Daily Fantasy sports, there are a few things which I feel could be improved.

  • The selection of sports is excellent, but US College Sports is a growing market in Australia and would be an excellent addition
  • While the point of DFS is ‘no season-long commitments’ that is a market that could be used.
  • Footy tipping or something similar would be an excellent addition too

How does Moneyball work?

You’ll find that when you first log in to Moneyball, the interface is quite intuitive and easy to navigate.

You should be able to get your first team entered within five minutes.

Or, if you’re like me, you’ll agonise over what midfielder to put in as a flex.

How to play Moneyball

Below is a run-down of how to play, using Moneyball’s help page.

Step 1 – Find A Contest

When you choose a competition, you can filter several ways.

You can filter your selections by:

  • Sport
  • Competition size
  • Entry fee
  • Contest name

You’ll then be shown a selections of games to take part in. Pick the contest you’d like to play.

If no existing games suit you (or you want to challenge your mates directly), then create your contest and let the trash-talking begin!

Step 2 – Choose Your Team

Each competition has a range of games to choose from.

For example, in AFL, it may be every game of the weekend, or perhaps just the Saturday night games.

All players for the games listed are available for selection.

Each player to choose has a salary that is defined by their recent form, along with their season form.

You can look at the stats and news on each player in helping with their selection.

Building a team on Moneyball

You need to select nine players using a salary cap of $60,000.

By clicking on a player’s name, you can see up to date news and analysis on a player.

You can also see their statistics for the year.

Step 3 – Game Underway

The competitions are updated in real-time, so you can ride every point, rebound, and possession.

If you’re anything like me, you’ll always be checking to see if you’re in the money or not.

I’ll tell you what; there isn’t much that makes me nervous like needing your NBA big-guy to grab a few more boards so you can take home some hard-earned!

Step 4 – Results

Results are made final within a few hours of the contest ending.

Payouts are instantly made to the wallet of players.

Moneyball alternatives

In Australia, the most prominent alternative to Moneyball is Draftstars. Draftstars and Moneyball have a lot of crossovers, and to be honest, you’re good choosing any option.
